Use this simple tool to calculate your car’s stopping distance at different speeds.
The calculator considers various conditions, such as speed and road surface type, to determine a car’s braking distance.
Enter the relevant data into the fields to find out how many meters the car will travel when braking. It helps you determine the vehicle stopping sight distance.
🚗 Car Stopping Distance Calculator
Estimate your total stopping distance based on speed, driver state, vehicle type, and road conditions.
Formula Used
Thinking distance = speed (m/s) × reaction time (s)
Braking distance = v² ÷ (2 × μ × g) — where μ is road friction (0.10–0.80) and g = 9.81 m/s²
Vehicle type and passenger load apply a multiplier to braking distance, reflecting mass and brake-system differences.
Total stopping distance = Thinking + Braking.
The formula includes the following variables:
- Driver reaction time
- Vehicle type
- Road surface type
- Number of people in the vehicle.
